Undergoing a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is an important step in your fertility journey. The procedure is typically brief and well tolerated, but we recognize that some patients may feel anxious about discomfort. To support your experience, we offer Pro-Nox, a patient-controlled nitrous oxide system, as well as additional options such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen.
During the exam, you may experience cramping when the catheter is placed and as contrast is introduced into the uterus and fallopian tubes. This sensation is often similar to menstrual cramps and may feel either dull or sharp. Some patients notice a brief, more intense cramp at the moment the contrast is injected, which is a normal part of the procedure.
To help minimize discomfort during your HSG, we offer several supportive options:
Pro-Nox (nitrous oxide & oxygen): This safe, fast-acting inhaled gas is self-administered, allowing you to control relief of discomfort and anxiety during the procedure. Its effects begin within seconds and wear off quickly, so you can resume normal activities shortly afterward.
Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen: Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever 30–60 minutes before your appointment may help reduce cramping during the exam. These medications can also be used afterward if needed.
Relaxation Techniques: Simple measures such as slow, deep breathing can help reduce tension and make the experience more manageable.
✅ Rapid onset: Relief begins within seconds.
✅ Patient-controlled: You control when and how much to use.
✅ Reduces anxiety: Helps you remain relaxed throughout the procedure.
✅ Quick recovery: Effects wear off rapidly, allowing you to resume normal activities right away.
If you choose Pro-Nox during your HSG test, you will use a small mouthpiece to inhale the gas as needed. This ensures you remain awake and alert while experiencing relief from discomfort associated with the procedure. Once the hysterosalpingogram is complete, the effects of the Pro-Nox dissipate within 2-3 minutes, allowing you to continue your day as usual.
Most patients are good candidates for Pro-Nox, and many benefit from taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen beforehand. If you have any concerns about discomfort during your HSG, please let us know—we are happy to discuss the most appropriate approach for you
Pro-Nox is available for $75 during hysterosalpingogram (HSG) exams. Please note that it is not covered by insurance, as it is considered an optional comfort measure rather than a medically necessary treatment.
